We're Looking for 2 Health Educators

Madison Health Department is accepting applications for two (2) full-time Health Educator I positions.

Responsibilities for each position include, but are not limited to:

(1) Health Educator I – Harm Reduction

This position centers on supporting individuals in the pre-contemplative and contemplative stages of substance use, offering respectful, non-judgmental services rooted in evidence-based public health strategies. The ideal candidate will bring compassion, professionalism, and understanding of lived experience with substance use disorder, allowing opportunities to build professional trust-based relationships with program participants while maintaining healthy boundaries in accordance with peer support best practices.

Responsible for engaging directly with people who use drugs in a variety of settings, including, but not limited to the local health department campus, Harm Reduction Mobile Unit and attending outreach events. The role will include providing harm reduction supplies and services, overdose prevention education (including naloxone distribution), and representing the program at community events, health fairs, businesses, and partner organizations. The worker will also help create outreach materials, such as social media content and flyers, to promote program services and messages.  This position must uphold the core principles of harm reduction, providing non-judgmental, non-coercive care, promoting positive change, and treating all participants with dignity and respect. The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of, or be willing to be trained in, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, harm reduction philosophy, the science of substance use disorder, de-escalation techniques, non-clinical testing for infectious diseases and basic public health concepts.  This position serves under the direction of the Harm Reduction Coordinator

(2) Health Educator I – Community

Responsible for assisting with the identification of community health needs, participating in health education program planning, and promoting positive health behaviors while working to reduce or eliminate health risk behaviors.  Professionally conduct health education in a variety of settings – daycares, schools, health fairs, individual and group locations. Submit written health education promotional materials for supervisor approval, using a variety of methods, including social media and website content.  Assist with collecting data to analyze health program needs and to meet grant deliverables.  Participate in the health education evaluation process. Contribute as a team member, having a basic understanding of the team process. This position will assist with harm reduction efforts, syringe services, smoking cessation, child passenger safety instruction, suicide prevention, maternal/child health services and other identified health education programs. Requires strong communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as the ability to work effectively with diverse groups and populations. This position serves under the direction of the Community Health Director.

Starting Salary: $18.07-$22.46 per hour.  Grade 15

Salary is contingent on relevant work history and education and must be included to be considered in the starting rate of pay.

Minimum Education, Training or Experience:

Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree. One year of health promotion, education, harm reduction or community-based experience is preferred.

Special Requirements:

Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.  Possess a working knowledge of the geographic area and/or ability to navigate to assigned locations with use of maps, contacts and directions. May be required to work evenings and weekends to support community events and workshops.
