W.I.C. Women, Infants & Children

how it works

The Women’s Infant and Children’s Program, or W.I.C., is a supplemental food program that provides nutrition counseling, breastfeeding support, education, nutritious foods, and referrals to health care ​services.
The very first WIC clinic in the nation opened in January of 1974, right here in Kentucky.

Many people don’t know that even working families can get WIC. For example, a family of four can make up to $47,638 a year and still qualify for WIC.

WIC is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture. It provides monthly benefits to buy roughly $45 worth of healthy foods for each eligible person in your family. It also provides nutrition tips and breastfeeding education and support at no cost.

To be eligible for you you must meet criteria below:

Common Questions

You can set up an appointment to apply for WIC by calling Richmond Clinic (859)-623-7312 or Berea Clinic (859)-986-1192.

When you come to your appointment, make sure you bring the following items:

  • Proof of household income, such as pay stubs, W-2 forms OR a current medical card

  • Proof of residence, such as current bill with your address, a current bank statement, lease agreement, mortgage agreement OR a current medical card

  • Proof of identity, such as a current driver’s license, birth certificate, social security card, shot record OR current medical card

Some examples of the foods you may receive are:

  • 1% Milk and Cheese

  • Vitamin C-rich juices

  • Iron-rich cereals

  • Eggs

  • Dried beans, peas, or peanut butter

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables

  • Whole grains (bread, rice or tortillas)

  • A baby may get infant formula, jars of baby foods, and infant cereal

WIC Shopper App Available

WICShopper simplifies WIC. WICShopper provides tools that will make WIC easy for you to use. Get more information and find out how to install it on your iPhone or Android here. Once you have registered your card, your current benefits will automatically download to the app. Scan products as you shop to verify WIC eligibility. The app will tell you if it is WIC eligible. If your benefits have been downloaded, the app will tell you if the item is eligible for YOU with your remaining benefits.

WIC Online Nutrition Education

Want to have fewer appointments to keep your WIC benefits? Soon you will be able to do the two required WIC Nutritional Education visits per year online or by telephone! Your child must be between 1-5 years of age to qualify for online visits. Click the link above to register or ask your WIC counselor during your next visit if you qualify for this service.
